Why vegan food?
For the animals
The suffering of animals in the meat industry is something that we can no longer ignore. Animals are being bred, fattened, mistreated and killed too young because of our over consumption. Too many animals reside in terrible conditions, in empty stalls and never see the light of day, only so that profits can be made. The biological meat industry does take animal suffering into consideration although animals are still kept and bred purely for our consumption. This applies to cows that are kept pregnant for their milk and bees that work hard to produce honey. A vegan diet prevents animal suffering.
For the earth
A vegan lifestyle makes a huge difference to the environment. 14.5% of the total CO2 emissions derives from the cattle industry which accounts for more than cars, airplanes and ships. Large scale deforestation creates room to grow soya which in turn is used as cattle fodder. The amount of water needed to produce 1 kilo of meat is shocking: 15 000 litres are needed to produce 1 kilo of beef, 6 000 litres of water is needed to produce 1 kilo of pork and 4 300 litres to produce 1 kilo of chicken. If everyone in Holland were to refrain from eating meat for one a day a week it would be the equivalent of having 430 000 less cars on the road.
At the moment 70% of the available farmland is being used to produce cattle fodder. Many kilos of fodder is needed to produce just a single kilo of meat. It would make more sense to use the available farmland to produce food for humans. In this way, more food can be produced which can help counter the global food shortage. Another problem of global proportions, is the way in which clean drinking water is wasted during the production of meat. We can help humanity by changing the way we handle farmland and clean drinking water.
For your health
“You are what you eat”. Food gives you energy and the vitamins you need to keep you healthy for as long as possible. Consumption of unhealthy animals or animal products is also unhealthy for the consumer. Consumption of animals that already died before reaching the slaughterhouse can even be dangerous. One can taste the stress that an animal experiences during its lifetime and during slaughtering. There are more than enough alternatives in Holland and in the rest of the world. It can however be difficult to find a good restaurant. The home cooks at Vegan Like Home can help you find a healthy lifestyle.
